Pieces fall into place, one after another, faster and faster. Apart from the central row, every cell lies in a room of four cells, and a room's answer is entered in reading order within it. The rooms are clued in the order of their first cells. The down entries ignore the walls, each running straight down from its numbered cell for the length given with its clue. A cell that no down entry reaches is checked by its room alone. The central row is unclued. Five of its letters arrive from the downs that cross it, and what the rooms have been all along suggests the rest. Then strike the central row out and let everything above it drop by one row. Everything still reads: every room survives intact, and each down entry that ran through the struck row closes up into a shorter word. The central row's answer is two words (7,5).
