Ups and Downs

A game where all momentum can be wiped out by one stroke of bad luck.

The path answers run along the numbers in clue order, beginning at the square marked START, with bars showing where one ends and the next begins. The rest are ordinary down answers, labelled by their top cell.

Four path answers are longer than the run of cells the bars give them. Each fills its stretch, breaks off, and finishes in one of the four small spaces that have no clue of their own. Rule a straight line from each break to its landing.

Two of those spaces lie further back along the path than the answers that fill them, so twice you will reach a stretch you cannot fill yet. Leave it and come back. The last path answer runs off the end of the board and finishes in the space in front of the START.

Fifteen clues, from both sets, have one letter misprinted in the definition. The corrected letters, in clue order, path before down, spell in four words what that last answer has done (4,2,6,3).
